Kuching: Strong winds that swept through Kuching yesterday afternoon caused the roofs of numerous homes to be blown off, displaced or severely damaged, disrupting the daily lives of several affected residents.
In response, Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii’s Service Centre has activated Disaster Relief Assistance to provide immediate support to households affected by the incident within the parliamentary constituency.
“We understand that this happened suddenly and has caused significant disruption to affected families, especially those whose roofs have been badly damaged. Our priority is to ensure that affected residents receive timely assistance to help them deal with their immediate needs,” Yii said in a statement.
Following the incident, Yii’s service team, together with ADUN for Pending Violet Yong and ADUN for Padungan Chong Chieng Jen, visited affected areas and homes to assess the damage and understand the difficulties residents faced.
In Kenyalang, several older residential houses were affected, with some roofs suffering severe damage after being unable to withstand the strong winds. The damage has also raised urgent concerns over water leakage and residential safety.
“Our service team will do its utmost, within our capacity, to assist the affected families through this difficult period. We will continue to assess the situation on the ground and provide timely assistance to those who are eligible,” Yii said.
The relief assistance covers the Pending, Batu Lintang and Padungan state constituencies.
Eligible applicants must have a residential address within the Bandar Kuching parliamentary constituency, and the homeowner must be a voter in the constituency.
Applicants are required to submit a copy of the homeowner’s MyKad, the latest electricity or water bill, and photographs showing the damage.
If the homeowner has passed away, a death certificate may be submitted, and an immediate family member may apply on their behalf.

Yii also urged residents to remain vigilant during severe weather and avoid going outdoors unless necessary, particularly near trees, signboards, power lines and other potentially dangerous areas.
