Kuching: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has been called to take urgent and sustained action to address the persistent mosquito problem in Tabuan Desa.
Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian, said the local authority should deploy the necessary resources to carry out thorough cleaning, grass-cutting, drain clearing and continuous vector control measures in the affected areas.
According to Kong, while a fogging operation was recently conducted following residents’ complaints about the surge in mosquitoes, the problem appears to persist.
He said residents had earlier voiced concerns over the increasing number of mosquitoes and the potential risk of dengue in the neighbourhood.
“Fogging alone would not be enough if the underlying causes of mosquito breeding were not properly addressed.
“Without proper maintenance of drains, clearing of overgrown vegetation and regular monitoring, the mosquito problem will continue to pose a serious public health risk to residents,” he said.
During a recent visit to the area, Kong observed that several backlanes were overgrown with long grass, while drains were clogged with stagnant water – conditions that create ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
He said accumulated fallen leaves and unkempt vegetation in some areas were also contributing to the problem.
Kong urged MBKS to address the issue with urgency to prevent it from worsening.
He also called on the city’s mayor to personally visit the affected neighbourhoods to understand better the seriousness of the situation faced by residents.
“Public health concerns, particularly those involving dengue risk, should never be taken lightly. Immediate and sustained action is required to prevent a potential outbreak,” Kong said.
