Sibu: DAP Sarawak Committee Members and Private Secretary to Lanang MP Stanley Chiew have called on Sibu Hospital management to take immediate action following allegations of patient mistreatment by a doctor.
Chiew said he would formally bring the matter to the hospital director and urged that strict disciplinary measures be imposed if necessary.
“We must not allow one bad apple to spoil the whole barrel, nor allow a few rogue individuals to tarnish the reputation of the many dedicated, responsible, and professional healthcare workers, or erode the public’s trust in them,” he said.
His remarks come after a senior citizen claimed he was roughly handled and subjected to an inappropriate remark by a doctor at the Sibu Hospital on 3 December 2025.
According to the patient who revealed the case to The Borneo Post, not only was he physically mishandled despite his vulnerable condition – having recently undergone surgery and currently battling rectal cancer but he was also told, “Uncle, why don’t you just die, then no need to suffer so much.”
“I am deeply disturbed by the allegation. Such words, if proven true, are utterly unacceptable and completely against the ethics, professionalism, and compassion expected of any medical practitioner.
“Sometimes, I have received numerous complaints regarding the rough and unprofessional attitude of some hospital staff. Now, with this incident involving a doctor, it further underscores the urgent need to strengthen professionalism, empathy, and patient-care standards within our healthcare system,” Chiew said.
He also appealed to the patient involved and anyone else who has faced similar mistreatment to come forward and provide complete information or evidence.
“Only with complete details can we pursue full accountability and ensure the case is properly investigated and handled fairly. No patient should ever be treated without dignity, respect, and proper care.
“DAP has always stood by the people and will continue to help and support citizens in seeking justice and protection of their rights,” he added, emphasising that he will continue to monitor the situation closely to safeguard the welfare and dignity of all patients in Sibu.
