Kuching: Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong has urged the Sarawak State Government and the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government to immediately direct Kuching City Parking Systems Sdn. Bhd. (KCPS) to refund all holders of valid unused parking coupons.
Yong said the company must carry out a comprehensive refund exercise for all parking coupons purchased before the new Pay & Go parking system is implemented, stressing that the refund process must not be selective or conditional.
“The state government must instruct KCPS to honour its commitment and refund all valid unused parking coupons in full,” she said in a statement.
“The public should not be burdened with unnecessary conditions or excuses, especially when the company is partly owned by local councils entrusted to serve the people.”
Yong said she had received complaints from members of the public who were denied refunds for parking coupons that did not bear the year “2029”, despite being valid and unused. She criticised the practice as unfair and misleading.
“When a company makes a promise to the public, it must honour it. People bought these coupons in good faith, and they deserve a full refund,” she added.
Yong also pointed out that Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng sits on the KCPS board, with both MBKS and Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) among the company’s shareholders.
She said this makes it even more important for the authorities to ensure transparency and fairness in how the refund exercise is carried out.
