Kuching: The story of a father’s perseverance has reached a joyful conclusion, as his son finally received Malaysian citizenship after years of uncertainty and struggle.
Michael Kong Feng Nian, Special Assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, shared the story, describing it as a powerful example of a parent’s love, sacrifice, and determination.
According to Michael Kong, the case began in 2004 when Mr Go, a resident of Kuching, became a single father after his Indonesian partner returned to her home country, leaving him to raise their newborn son alone.
“Since then, Mr Go has taken on both parental roles, providing his son with love, care, and education despite the challenges of single parenthood.
“To secure legal recognition for his child, Mr. Go underwent a DNA test to confirm paternity and ensured his name was placed on his son’s birth certificate. With that, he then applied for Malaysian citizenship for his boy. Sadly, despite clear evidence of his paternity, the Home Ministry rejected the application,” he said.
Michael Kong said that, undeterred, Mr Go sought help from DAP Stampin in late 2023.
“With the party’s guidance and persistence, he filed the necessary appeals and continued to fight for his son’s rightful status. Finally, in July 2025, his son’s Malaysian citizenship was approved.
“It was a moment filled with relief, joy, and hope when we accompanied Mr. Go and his son to collect his very first Malaysian IC. This marked not just the end of a long struggle, but the beginning of a new life as a recognised Malaysian,” Michael Kong shared.
He added that the case serves as a reminder of the human stories that lie behind every application and every policy decision for citizenship – stories of love, perseverance, and the strength of family.

Now, with his new identity card in hand, Mr Go’s son begins a new chapter – not only as a Malaysian by law, but as a Malaysian at heart.
