Kuching: A political controversy has erupted over recent claims made by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching Youth deputy secretary Alan Bong, who had said students who obtained 10As with A- grades were not automatically offered matriculation placements and must undergo a merit-based selection process.
This claim has been strongly refuted by DAP Sarawak Assistant Publicity Secretary Michael Kong Feng Nian, who cited an official clarification issued by the Ministry of Education on June 25, 2025.
“According to the ministry, all students with 10 As or more, including those with A grades, will receive automatic offers for matriculation.
“This move reflects the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to recognising academic excellence and ensuring a fairer, more inclusive education system,” Michael Kong said in a press statement.
He criticised SUPP Youth for making public statements without proper verification, especially given that SUPP holds positions within the Federal Government.
“It is appalling that a party with sitting Members of Parliament would allow its Youth leaders to issue such irresponsible claims without even basic fact-checking,” Michael Kong stated, adding that the misinformation appears politically motivated due to the Deputy Minister overseeing the policy being from DAP.
Michael Kong went further to describe the incident as part of a larger pattern, accusing SUPP of engaging in “loud, reckless, and factually detached” political behaviour, drawing parallels with the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA).
“The public deserves better than these petty, misleading antics. SUPP must realise that being part of the government carries responsibilities, and it must not peddle disinformation to score cheap political points against DAP.
“We urge SUPP to start acting like a serious political party. Instead of playing childish blame games, they should focus on bringing real improvements to the people they claim to represent and if they cannot do that, the very least they can do is get their facts right,” he concluded.
