Kuching: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak is moving forward with significant policy reforms aimed at strengthening the commercial vehicle industry through closer alignment with LPKP Sabah and the introduction of new safety measures, including mandatory GPS installation.
According to LPKP Sarawak Chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian, this initiative is part of an ongoing commitment to harmonise regulations between Sarawak and Sabah, following a key meeting between both offices.
“Currently, commercial vehicle operators in Sabah and Sarawak face challenges due to differing regulations, which create unnecessary complexity and red tape.
“By aligning policies, we aim to build a more seamless and business-friendly regulatory environment,” said Michael Kong in a statement.
The policy alignment is also expected to ease cross-border trade with neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Brunei, thereby enhancing regional economic cooperation within ASEAN.
In a related move, LPKP Sarawak announced plans to introduce a new policy requiring all commercial vehicles to be equipped with a GPS tracking system. The objective is to boost road safety, ensure regulatory compliance, and enable real-time vehicle monitoring.
The GPS systems must comply with safety and technical standards set by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), ensuring reliability and consistency across the industry.
“This policy will not only improve compliance with transportation regulations but also help reduce traffic offences and enhance public safety on our roads,” Michael Kong added.
The initiative has been well received by industry players, who view the harmonisation of policies as a step toward greater transparency and operational efficiency, ultimately supporting business growth and cross-border expansion.
LPKP Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to continually refining and modernising its policies in response to industry needs, with active support and input from board members and stakeholders.
These efforts aim to build a stronger and more efficient regulatory framework that empowers the commercial vehicle sector and contributes to Sarawak’s economic development.
