Kuching: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has sounded the alarm over a disturbing case of online harassment and cyber intrusion, calling for urgent action from the authorities after assisting a victim in drafting an official complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The victim, known as Kenny, approached Chong for help after becoming the target of what started as a typical online scam but quickly escalated into a malicious campaign of digital harassment involving his personal and family contacts.
“What the scammer has done is not only criminal but a blatant violation of personal privacy and digital safety. This could happen to anyone. The authorities must act swiftly and decisively to protect the public,” said Chong in a statement.
A scam turns malicious
On 2 June 2025, Kenny received a series of WhatsApp calls and messages from an unknown individual who claimed to offer personal loans.
Realising it was a scam after several messages, Kenny chose to ignore the caller. However, the situation took a dark turn when the scammer allegedly accessed Kenny’s phone contact list and began targeting his relatives, including his wife, parents, siblings, and in-laws, with repeated phone calls and WhatsApp messages from various unknown numbers.
Even more distressing, the scammer published Kenny’s identity card on public Facebook groups, “古晋吹水站” and “诗巫吹水站,” along with defamatory content intended to damage his reputation.
“Kenny never gave out any of his relatives’ numbers, yet the scammer was somehow able to get them.
“He suspects that his phone was hacked during their WhatsApp exchanges. That kind of breach is severe and needs immediate investigation,” Chong explained.
Chong warned that if left unchecked, such acts could set a dangerous precedent where scammers not only try to deceive people for money but then retaliate when exposed or ignored.
