Kuching: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has reiterated its longstanding commitment to youth leadership, with party leaders highlighting efforts to attract and empower young Malaysians in the political sphere.
Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Kuching DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY), DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen noted that DAP continues to boast the youngest and most dynamic leadership lineup among political parties nationwide.
“DAP has always valued the role of youth in leadership. Our track record proves that we are committed to nurturing new generations of capable and visionary political leaders,” he said.
He also recalled a significant reform introduced during Anthony Loke’s tenure as DAPSY Chief, when the age limit for the youth wing was lowered from 40 to 35 years old.
“At the time, some expressed concerns about succession, but we showed that DAP has the capacity and courage to cultivate young talent and ensure leadership continuity,” he added.
The party emphasised the rising importance of voters aged 18 to 35, calling them a “pivotal demographic” in shaping Malaysia’s political future.
DAPSY, Chong said, plays a critical role in engaging this segment of the electorate by serving as a bridge between the party and the nation’s youth.
“Several current Cabinet Ministers, including Anthony Loke, Hannah Yeoh, Nga Kor Ming, and Sivakumar, were cited as examples of leaders who rose through DAP’s youth ranks. Despite being younger than many of their political counterparts, they have demonstrated capability and earned public trust,” he said.
In adapting to the changing media landscape, Chong urged DAPSY to strengthen its presence on platforms popular among youth, such as Instagram and TikTok.
“It’s vital that our ideals, policies, and vision are clearly communicated through the platforms young Malaysians use every day,” he stressed.
He also encouraged DAPSY to continue organising youth-focused programmes both online and offline, pledging full support for such initiatives.
“We want young people to feel that politics is not just for the older generation, but a space where their voices and ideas are vital,” Chong added.
In closing, he called on all DAPSY members to stay committed to the party’s mission, recruit more talented young individuals, and pursue constructive political action.
“Let us live up to the trust placed in us by the party, by the country, and by the people.”
